Rheology Essentials for Pharmaceutical Scientists is a free two-part webinar hosted by the AAPS Topical and Transdermal Community designed to help pharmaceutical scientists navigate the sometimes confusing world of practical rheology and viscosity measurements.

This first session will introduce the core concepts of relevance to the characterization of topical pharmaceuticals. With reference to a range of easily recognised behaviours in everyday products, Neil will introduce and explain the palette of rheological properties that a pharmaceutical scientist can measure as part of their formulation, process development, and quality control activities.
This 1st session covers:
- “Thinking like a rheologist”: Identifying the rheological “traits” of a range of material types, with particular relevance to topical formulations.
- Shear stress, shear rate and shear strain
- Viscosity: Non-Newtonian flow, shear-thinning and zero-shear viscosity
- Structure breakdown and recovery: Thixotropy and yield stress phenomenon
- The often confusing viscoelastic moduli of storage modulus (G’) and loss modulus (G”)
- The toolkit of testing methods at the rheologist’s disposal, including
- Viscosity profiling across a range of shear conditions
- Oscillatory amplitude, frequency and temperature sweep methods
- Creep testing
The webinar will be of value to two groups:
- Formulators and quality controllers who wish to better characterise their products for formulation development, regulatory submissions and quality control
- Recipients of rheology data who wish to confidently discuss and interpret results with laboratory analysts, management and regulatory agencies.
